Cooling towers are an important component of refrigeration systems. They are common in industries such as oil & gas & Petrochemical refineries, Steel Complexes, power plants and etc. Water is the most common cooling medium used in cooling processes, due to its availability and high heat capacity. These uses require large amounts of water and often present potential for water saving.
Water consumption is an important problem in dry zones and poor water supply areas like Iran. For these areas use of a combination of wet and dry cooling towers (hybrid cooling) has been suggested in order to reduce water consumption.
During low temperature months, air is used for cooling, while in high temperature months, water is used. This advantage is one of the main factors for saving water and energy in hybrid cooling towers

Working Principle of Hybrid Towers:
On hybrid cooling towers, there would be set up to many kind of operation type for customer request. For less pressure drop, system pipeline could manufacture with parallel or more dry cooling capacity system could manufacture serial. It is related with customer request.
On drawing, red pipes specified hot inlet water and blue pipes specified cold water which is coming from dry heat exchange coil.
You could see a serial piping type on this drawing. Hot water firstly enters to dry heat exchanger coil, it cools on there. On winter times, only the dry cooling system maybe enough for all cooling requirement. For this kind of design, if you add a three way valve, with activated with temperature transmitter, system could work 100% dry operation.
